2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl Preview

 

The 2023 bowl season rolls on Tuesday night with a trio of games. In the nightcap, the Kansas Jayhawks face the UNLV Rebels. The contest features a match-up of one of the surprise teams in college football facing a team looking for their first bowl win in 15 years. Let’s introduce ourselves to both teams, give some history, and make a prediction with our 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl Preview.

2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl Preview: Jayhawks and Rebels Meet In Arizona

History and Sponsorship

The game began in 1989 and was known as the Copper Bowl until 1996. From there it’s had several different sponsors. From the Insight.com Bowl to Insight Bowl to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in 2012 and 2013. It became the Cactus Bowl in 2014 then the Cheez-It Bowl. Lastly, it became the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in 2020. In case you didn’t know they are one of the largest retail mortgage lenders in the United States.

In addition to several sponsors, the bowl has also been played in several different locations. Originally it was held in Tuscon, then moved to Phoenix in 2000. From 2006-2015 the game was played in Tempe then in 2016 it was moved back to Phoenix at Chase Bank Field home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Normally the game matches teams from the Big Ten and Big 12. However when there weren’t enough Big Ten teams available the Mountain West stepped in.
